Bitcoin MVRV Ratio: Why Its Cycle Thresholds Keep Shrinking
MVRV compares what the market says Bitcoin is worth against what holders paid for it on average. The ≤1 and ≥3 bands are the standard reference for reading a cycle -- but the actual peak MVRV reaches at each cycle top has been shrinking for five cycles running. Here's where our figure comes from, how to read the zones, and the real numbers behind that decline.
MVRV (Market Value to Realized Value) is the relationship between what the market says Bitcoin is worth today and what holders paid for it on average. It's a valuation thermometer for the cycle, not a timing signal -- it can sit in an extreme zone for weeks before the actual turn. Most write-ups on MVRV stop at the definition and the ≤1/≥3 bands. Few show what those bands actually look like across five real cycle tops, or where the number itself comes from. That's what this piece is for.

What MVRV Measures
MVRV compares two ways of measuring the entire Bitcoin network's worth. Market value (market cap) is today's price times every coin in circulation -- what all of Bitcoin would fetch if sold right now. Realized value (realized cap) is different: it prices each coin at whatever it was worth the last time it moved on-chain, not today's price -- an approximation of the real average cost the market paid. It's the gap between a neighborhood's asking prices and what the neighbors actually paid for their houses, applied to the whole network.
The Formula, and Where Our Number Actually Comes From
MVRV = Market Value / Realized Value
An MVRV of 2 means the market prices the network at double the aggregate cost basis of those holding it. Below 1, the market on average sits underwater relative to what it paid.
At NodeWitness, we pull MVRV from the Coin Metrics Community API -- a free, public source. That's a different call than the one we made for HODL waves, which we compute ourselves by walking the UTXO set from our own Bitcoin node, because no free API publishes that particular breakdown. With MVRV, the situation is reversed: Coin Metrics already publishes it reliably, so duplicating that work today wouldn't add anything. We do plan to calculate our own realized value -- and from it, an on-chain MVRV -- from our node's UTXO set, the same way we already do for HODL waves; it's the same underlying calculation NUPL derives from, which we cover separately. Our node has now finished syncing, so this is the next natural step on our metrics roadmap, with no committed date yet. The rule we hold across the project is simple: we don't advertise a capability before it actually exists.
Reading the Bottom and Top Zones
Historically, MVRV has drawn two useful zones:
- Below 1 -- the market in aggregate losses. Has coincided with cycle bottoms in 2015, 2018, and 2022.
- Above 3 -- large unrealized gains for most holders, historically tied to the final stages of bull markets and heavier distribution.
It's the extremes that carry signal, not the values in between. These same bands (≤1 / ≥3) are the ones we use as a reference for MVRV's contribution inside the weighted Score -- what we don't publish is the exact weight it carries against the other indicators, only the direction it's pushing each day.
Why Fixed Thresholds Expire: Five Cycle Tops, One Shrinking Number
This is the part most explainers skip entirely: fixed thresholds age, and not in a minor way. Looking at Bitcoin's last five cycle tops, the peak MVRV reached at each one, in order, was:
7.74 → 5.25 → 4.72 → 2.85 → 2.29
Every top landed lower than the one before it. The "≥3" line commonly cited as the euphoria threshold would have been conservative on the first cycle in that series and is already hard to clear on the most recent one -- an MVRV of 2.85 never crossed it, even though it still marked a real top. Applying an older cycle's threshold to a recent one can leave you waiting for a signal that no longer arrives with the same intensity, simply because Bitcoin is a different network with every cycle that passes: more capitalized, with more institutional participation, and with volatility that keeps compressing.
That's why a normalized variant exists -- the MVRV Z-Score, which adjusts for historical volatility so cycles of very different magnitude can be compared without leaning on a fixed number that expires. It's also why, inside the Score, we don't treat ≥3 as a fixed wall -- it's one of several reference points that get combined with the rest of the indicators.
What MVRV Doesn't Tell You
- It's a long-cycle indicator, not a timing one. It can sit in an extreme zone for weeks before the actual turn.
- Lost coins distort the figure. Millions of BTC that are cryptographically inaccessible stay anchored to very low prices, permanently pulling down realized value -- and therefore the ratio.
- A movement isn't always a sale. Moving funds between wallets you own also resets that coin's "price," with no sale involved -- a known-bias estimate, not an exact figure.
- It doesn't separate age or size. It's calculated over the entire supply at once, without distinguishing who bought yesterday from who hasn't moved coins in years -- that's what HODL waves are for.
MVRV Inside NodeWitness's Score
For a long-term accumulation profile, MVRV works as a context thermometer, not a trigger: in the low zone, the market is historically in a phase of opportunity for the patient accumulator; in the high zone, it's worth reviewing whether you're deploying capital under elevated risk. It's not a buy or sell recommendation -- that depends on your own strategy and risk tolerance -- just a way to know where in the cycle you stand.
Since every fixed threshold eventually expires, at NodeWitness MVRV is never used in isolation: it's one of several indicators feeding the combined Score, each covering a different angle of the cycle and offsetting the others' blind spots.
