What is a satoshi?
A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of bitcoin, the same role a cent plays for a dollar — except a bitcoin splits into 100,000,000 of them, not 100. The name honors Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Sats matter because one bitcoin is worth thousands of dollars: quoting an everyday amount in whole bitcoin gives an awkward decimal (0.00015 BTC), while sats give a clean whole number (15,000 sats) for the same value. The Bitcoin protocol itself works internally in satoshis, not fractional bitcoin.
