Michael Saylor Has No Heirs and Says He May Burn His Bitcoin Keys: "That's My Legacy"

Saylor's estate plan for his personal bitcoin is to make it unspendable. It's a striking idea. It also changes less on-chain than it sounds: our node would keep counting every one of those coins.

"I'm a single guy. I have no children. When I'm gone, I'm gone."

Michael Saylor said it near the end of an hour-long interview with Madison Reidy on The New Zealand Herald's Markets with Madison podcast, released on October 20, 2024 [1]. It comes at minute 58:37, right after a riff on steel, granite and the foundations of civilization. Then he finished the thought: "just like Satoshi left a million bitcoin to the universe. So I'm leaving whatever I've got to the civilization."

Most coverage in English ran the clip and moved on. The more interesting part came five months later.

From "leaving it to civilization" to burning the keys

His own summary:

"If I believe that and I burn those keys, then I have made everybody in the [Bitcoin] network that much richer and more powerful forever."

"We're all in it together, from now to eternity," he added. "So yeah, that's my legacy." [2]

There's no foundation in this picture, no endowed chair, no hospital wing. The logic is pure supply arithmetic: fewer spendable coins out of a fixed 21 million means everyone else's share is a little larger.

Saylor's stack and Strategy's are different things

Saylor's personal holdings were put at "more than 17,000 Bitcoin" by Yahoo Finance in March 2025 [3]. The article doesn't say where the number comes from, and we couldn't confirm it against a primary source, so treat it as reported. At $80,808, CoinGecko's price on our ticker at 07:15 UTC on October 15, 2026 [6], 17,000 BTC would be worth about $1.37 billion.

None of this touches Strategy's treasury. The company held 848,250 BTC as of October 11, 2026, according to its latest 8-K filing with the SEC [4]. That's roughly 50 times the figure attributed to Saylor personally. He also remains the company's loudest voice: on October 13, at DC Fintech Week, he told Bloomberg that bitcoin will climb back above $100,000, as reported by Crypto Briefing, which paraphrases him without a direct quote [5].

Bar chart drawn to scale: 6.86 million BTC unmoved for more than five years according to our node, 848,250 BTC held by Strategy and about 17,000 BTC attributed to Saylor

What a full node would see

Here's the part the "economic immortality" framing skips. Burning a key doesn't delete anything. The coins stay in the UTXO set, and every full node, ours included, keeps counting them.

Our latest snapshot, at block 970,858 (October 11, 2026), counts 20,096,204 BTC in circulation, 230 fewer than the protocol has issued [6]. That gap is coins the protocol itself can't spend, which we break down in how many bitcoin exist. Coins lost to a forgotten seed, or burned on purpose, aren't in it. A node can't tell them apart from coins held by someone very patient.

6,857,468 BTC, or 34.1% of the supply our node counts, haven't moved in more than five years, according to our HODL waves [6]. Our series doesn't break out a ten-year band. The 17,000 BTC attributed to Saylor, according to Yahoo Finance [3], would be about 0.08% of the total. If he burned the keys, those coins would simply age into that same five-year-plus band and sit there, indistinguishable from everything else that's dormant.

So the supply that actually trades is smaller than the headline number. Nobody can say by how much, though, not from the outside and not from a node.

Irreversible, and not yet done

Burning a private key can't be undone. No recovery path exists, for the owner, for an heir, or for anyone else. This is one man's choice, made from circumstances very few holders share, and nothing here is a recommendation. If you want your bitcoin to reach someone, see our guide to bitcoin inheritance planning.

As far as we can tell, Saylor hasn't said publicly how or when he'd do it, or whether he's left instructions. For now it's an intention he has stated in two interviews.

The irony writes itself. The man who says Strategy will "never sell" its bitcoin [2] wants his own to be unspendable by anyone. Himself included.

The dormant five-year-plus band moves with every node snapshot. Follow it, with full history, on our HODL waves chart or on the supply and holders page.
