Mt. Gox Buys Another Year: Repayments Pushed to October 2027, and the Trackers Disagree by 10,000 BTC
Fifteen days before the deadline, Mt. Gox's trustee moved it again, to October 31, 2027. Meanwhile 10,306 BTC moved by the estate in June have not budged, and two widely cited trackers cannot agree on how much the estate still holds.
The coins are where they were in June. On October 16, 2026, Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, an attorney, published a two-page notice moving the deadline for creditor repayments from October 31, 2026 to October 31, 2027, Japan Standard Time [1]. The court approved the change, which covers all three repayment types in the plan: Base, Early Lump-Sum and Intermediate [1]. On-chain, nothing has stirred in response.
What the trustee said, and what he left out
There is no count of creditors still waiting, no figure for the bitcoin still owed, and no word on whether this extension will be the last.
A deadline that keeps moving
The trustee's own notices tell the story. The plan's starting deadline was July 31, 2023, and it slipped twice that year before the yearly pattern set in: to September 30 in a January 2023 notice, then to October 31 in March [2]. Since then:
| Notice dated | Deadline moved from | To |
|---|---|---|
| September 21, 2023 [3] | October 31, 2023 | October 31, 2024 |
| October 10, 2024 [4] | October 31, 2024 | October 31, 2025 |
| October 27, 2025 [5] | October 31, 2025 | October 31, 2026 |
| October 16, 2026 [1] | October 31, 2026 | October 31, 2027 |
Only the September 2023 notice described a different problem: back then the trustee still needed creditor information and had to coordinate with banks and exchanges before paying anyone, and it named the Tokyo District Court as approving the change [3]. Bitcoin and bitcoin cash repayments began in July 2024 through the designated exchanges [6], and CoinDesk reports that roughly 19,500 creditors have received funds [7]. The three notices since then use nearly identical wording, down to the goal of paying the rest "to the extent reasonably practicable" [1][4][5].
Following the coins
The estate's last large transfer happened on June 2, 2026, in block 952,072, at 04:47 UTC. Citing Arkham, CoinDesk reported that 10,306.35 BTC went to a previously unseen address beginning 14FEEM and 116.30 BTC to the known hot wallet beginning 1Jbez [7].
We pulled the same transaction from mempool.space's public API [14]. It matches, and it gives the full addresses:
- 14FEEMRhaUwMbhf2rA1cFXmS1Zuk9nc9eq still holds all 10,306.35 BTC. As of block 971,828 on October 17, 2026, its history has exactly one transaction: the one that funded it [14].
- 1JbezDVd9VsK9o1Ga9UqLydeuEvhKLAPs6, which CryptoQuant identified in May 2024 as the address Mt. Gox consolidated its coins into [11], is empty. The June 116.30 BTC left it within two hours and moved on again the next day [14]. The Block, using Arkham data, reported a dust-sized amount sent to a Bitstamp cold wallet in the same operation [8].
- 1N7jWmv63mkMdsYzbNUVHbEYDQfcq1u8Yp received 24,051.76 BTC on December 5, 2024, in a transaction that also sent 3,819.56 BTC to the hot wallet [14]. ForkLog, citing Arkham, attributed it to Mt. Gox at the time [12]. It has never spent anything; the only later activity is tiny incoming payments from third parties [14].
34,358 BTC: the combined balance on October 17, 2026 of the two Mt. Gox-attributed addresses we could check on-chain [14]
Two trackers, a 10,000 BTC gap
Arkham data published by Crypto Briefing on September 30 put the estate's wallets at 34,387.51 BTC [9]. Glassnode's "Mt. Gox Trustee" series, checked on October 17, shows 24,051.87 BTC as of October 16 [10]. That is a gap of more than 10,000 BTC, and we are not choosing between them.
The chain narrows the question without settling it. Glassnode's figure is within 0.11 BTC of the balance of a single address, the December 2024 one. Add the 10,306.35 BTC sitting in the June address and you get 34,358 BTC, 29 BTC short of Arkham's number. One reading is that Glassnode's series has not picked up the June address yet. Neither firm lists on those pages which addresses it counts, so we cannot confirm that.
Our own check has edges too:
- It covers the current balance of those specific addresses, read straight from the chain, which anyone can repeat.
- It does not cover wallets we have not identified. The 29 BTC difference from Arkham suggests there are more, or that the two readings are from different dates.
- It does not prove ownership. The trustee does not publish addresses. The attribution comes from Arkham and CryptoQuant; what the chain adds is that every address here shares a transaction with the same hot wallet.
- It says nothing about whether these coins are earmarked for specific creditors, and it leaves out the estate's bitcoin cash and yen.
What would actually signal payouts
Shuffling coins between the estate's own addresses, as in June, is not a sale. Crypto Briefing's suggestion is to watch for transfers to exchange-linked addresses [9], and even then, an exchange deposit is not the same as selling, as our breakdown of what exchange flows and reserves really measure shows.
Until something moves, these coins sit in the older bands of our HODL waves: one stack dormant since June, the other since December 2024. They have an owner waiting to be paid, not a conviction holder, which is a tidy example of why holders not selling does not always mean what the headline implies.
One practical note for creditors: the trustee has repeatedly warned about fake websites and emails impersonating Mt. Gox or the trustee. The latest of those warnings, from October 2025, listed only three official sites: mtgox.com, claims.mtgox.com and material.mtgox.com [13]. The October 16 notice directs all inquiries to claims.mtgox.com [1].
When the estate's coins do move, the age bands will register it. We track them weekly from our own node on Supply & Holders.
